2017-2018 Studio Policies and Procedures
LESSON: Students are given one instructional session per week. Musicianship classes plus the recitals are included in the cost of tuition. Lessons will begin the week of August 21, 2017 and conclude May 21, 2018. Summer lessons are available in the month of June,
TUITION: Tuition is based on 30 lessons and 3 Group Lessons, from August 21, 2017 to May 21, 2018. Tuition is a flat monthly rate (regardless of holidays or 3-week lesson months) for 10 months (August 2017-May 2018). Students are enrolled for 10 Months of Lessons. A Flex Week is also built into the schedule.
Payment is due the first lesson of each month and considered late by the 10th. A $10 late fee will be added to delinquent payments. A $30 fee will be applied to any returned check. Tuition is the same each month regardless of the number of lessons. Payment reminders are sent electronically. All checks should be made payable to Turner Piano Studio. Other methods of payments include: cash, credit card, paypal or through online banking. No refunds are given when a student discontinues lessons.
REGISTRATION and MUSIC/SUPPLIES FEE: A non-refundable registration fee of $70 (per student) to purchase music and supplies is asked at the first lesson of the year. PIANO EXPLORER magazine will be included for students age 18 and under. Please note that this may not cover the entire year. Students will be billed for subsequent music purchases when necessary.
MUSICIANSHIP CLASSES: The Musicianship Classes are designed to enhance the private lesson by providing students the opportunity to perform for others, develop critiquing and musicianship skills and to have FUN! Musicianship Classes will not be made up. Classes will be held at Turner Piano Studio or other site. The Adult Student version of the Musicianship Class is named “The Crescendos.” It is a low stress version of performing, fellowship, and fun.
MISSED LESSONS and CANCELLATIONS: Any lessons that I have to cancel will be rescheduled. Students are expected to attend all lessons and all Musicianship Classes. As my studio schedule is full, and because each student has a reserved weekly lesson, there is simply not enough time in my teaching week to provide make-ups for missed lessons. If you happen to miss a lesson I will be using that time to assess your pianist’s progress and to plan activities for your child. Students may trade their lesson time with another student to help avoid absences. In the rare event that you know in advance that you will miss a lesson, it MAY be possible to swap with another student for that week. You make the arrangements and inform me as soon as possible.
SHORT LIST on EXPECTATIONS:
- Student should arrive well-prepared (and with all necessary materials) 5 minutes before the lesson/labtime.
- Practice requirements are set individually for each student based on age and level of study. A minimum of five days a week is expected for all piano students and a record of practice time will be kept. However, the quality of the practice is more important than the quantity.
- The student’s success depends heavily on constant support and encouragement. A reasonable amount of progress is expected from all students. It is basically impossible for a student to progress without consistent practice.
- Parents: Please read your pianist’s assignments. You may need to “sit in” occasionally at the lesson. Most younger students need supervision with practice.
PIANO: While a functional piano is ideal for proper piano study, keyboards are suitable if they have the following: full-sized keyboard (88 keys) and full-sized keys, touch sensitivity or “hammer-weighted action” and a pedal. Pianos should be tuned regularly (twice a year) and maintained. Having a good instrument to practice and play on is the most important aspect of music making. Please ask me for suggestions.
LESSON TERMINATION/SUSPENSION: Students may be asked to discontinue lessons due to excessive absences, late or unpaid tuition, or consistently unprepared lessons. If you plan to be out for a certain amount of time, payment is still expected. Should lessons need to terminate, a one month notice is appreciated.
AWARDS: Students have the opportunity to earn awards throughout the year in my studio. Completion of a theory book or booklet will earn a composer bust. Medals and trophies may be awarded for studio achievements. All medals, trophies, and certificates will be awarded at the Piano Celebration Concert in May. Students may also earn awards at Student Day, and Sonata Contest.
EVENTS: Performance is a fun and vital part of music training and a way to share the joy of music and pride of accomplishment. Participation in musicianship and performance classes, one performance evaluation event, and recitals are expected of all school-aged students based on ability and progress. See Calendar for upcoming events.
